Collaborative living is experiencing a revival in The Netherlands. In the midst of an unprecedented housing crisis, more and more people turn to collective self-organisation to provide housing that is community-oriented, environmentally sustainable and affordable. But why is it so difficult for these initiatives to get off the ground? And what can be learned from other European countries?

TOGETHER. Towards Collaborative Living presents a collection of essays, data and cases from The Netherlands and other European countries that build on a knowledge programme developed in 2021 by Project Together!. Tegenlicht aflevering over het Baskische stadje Mondragón, waar het overgrote deel van de bevolking werkt in coöperaties. Elke werknemer is er mede-eigenaar en men beslist samen welke keuzes het bedrijf moet maken. Met succes, ook in deze economisch harde tijden. Mondragon maakt hoogtechnologische producten en is als 7e grootste bedrijf van Spanje uitgegroeid tot een multinational met vestigingen over de hele wereld.

Tegenlicht onderzoekt dit coöperatieve model in tijden van crisis. “1 werknemer = 1 stem”, en zo beslisten de koelkastenfabrieksarbeiders vorig jaar democratisch om 8% van hun loon af te staan en zo de harde klappen samen op te vangen. Maar hoe diep is dit model verankerd in de samenleving? Zijn begrippen als solidariteit, medezeggenschap en zelfredzaamheid er gemeengoed? Tegenlicht volgt sleutelfiguren uit alle lagen van deze gemeenschap zoals de politieagent, de bankdirecteur, de burgemeester, de pastoor, de bandmedewerker die, ieder vanuit hun positie, het zout en zoet van het model laten zien.

The scarcity of resources, climate change, and the digitalization of everyday life are fuelling the economy of swapping, sharing, and lending—all of which are in some way linked to a culture of commoning. In this context, we understand commons as community-based processes that use, collectively manage, and organize generally accessible resources—referring to both goods and knowledge. 
Commons in Design explores the meaning and impact of commons—especially knowledge-based peer commons—and acts of commoning in design. It discusses networked, participatory, and open procedures based on the commons and commoning, testing models that negotiate the use of commons within design processes. In doing so, it critically engages with questions regarding designers’ positionings, everyday practices, self-understandings, ways of working, and approaches to education.

Governing The Commons - The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action

Book by Elinor Ostrom

The governance of natural resources used by many individuals in common is an issue of increasing concern to policy analysts. Both state control and privatization of resources have been advocated, but neither the state nor the market have been uniformly successful in solving common pool resource problems. After critiquing the foundations of policy analysis as applied to natural resources, Elinor Ostrom here provides a unique body of empirical data to explore conditions under which common pool resource problems have been satisfactorily or unsatisfactorily solved. Dr Ostrom uses institutional analysis to explore different ways - both successful and unsuccessful - of governing the commons. In contrast to the proposition of the 'tragedy of the commons' argument, common pool problems sometimes are solved by voluntary organizations rather than by a coercive state. Among the cases considered are communal tenure in meadows and forests, irrigation communities and other water rights, and fisheries.

Mietshäuser Syndikat

The Mietshäuser Syndikat (labbreviated to MHS) is a cooperative, non-commercial joint venture in Germany that helps communities acquire long-term affordable living space via a legal, collective property arrangement. As of September 2022, there are 177 Hausprojekte (intentional communities of a roughly housing cooperative form) within the MHS, with 17 further initiatives looking for suitable property.

The MHS was founded in 1992 in Freiburg im Breisgau by former squatters. As of September 2022, there are 177 MHS projects with over 3,800 residents and over 150,000 m2 of living space collectively: 17 accepted initiatives look for suitable property. The smallest object is a family house for 4 and the biggest is a former barracks of 4 buildings for 265. A regional coordination group for Tübingen was grounded in 2007, with further coordination groups for Bayern, Berlin Brandenburg, Bremen, Dresden, Hamburg, Gießen, Leipzig, Marburg and Nordrhein-Westfalen developing since then.

David Bollier: Think Like a Commoner

David Bollier has been exploring the commons as an author, policy strategist, international activist and blogger since the late 1990s. He pursues this work as Director of the Reinventing the Commons Program at the Schumacher Center for a New Economics, and through international collaborations with commons scholars, activists, and policy experts. Bollier's blog Bollier.org and his monthly podcast Frontiers of Commoning, are popular sources of news and commentary about the commons, along with his eleven books on various aspects of the commons. Into the Soil | The Wisdom of Regenerative Farming

In the documentary ”Into the Soil” we follow Brigid LeFevre, who runs a community supported agriculture operation (CSO) in Järna, Sweden. In her biodynamic vegetable garden she focuses on fermenting the harvest in order to enrich it with nutritious lactic acid bacteria.
Brigid grew up in an anthroposophically inspired Camphill community in Northern Ireland where volunteers lived and worked together with people with special needs. It was a self-sufficient community where the local store brought in bulk organic produce and each household would write down their purchases – without any actual exchange of money.

Compendium Rights of Nature — Case studies from Six Continents

In our time of ecological crisis, the law may provide some new and much- needed perspective. Worldwide, an increasing number of natural entities – forests, rivers, mountains, even Mother Earth herself – are being recognized as so-called legal persons. In this legal revolution, nature is no longer seen as an object to be used and discarded, but rather as a subject with intrinsic value and, importantly, legally enforceable rights.

The Embassy of the North Sea commissioned Laura Burgers and Jessica den Outer to author this Compendium, which focuses on one or two case-studies per continent. Each case-study offers a sketch of the different ways in which the rights of nature have been recognized, with the authors detailing the context and world view underpinning those rights, as well as their current implementation and enforcement.

Pas op de vrijplaats

Met de film PAS OP DE VRIJPLAATS bevraagt ADEV het nieuwe vrijplaatsenbeleid van de gemeente Amsterdam, in samenwerking met filmmaker Floris Schäfer. Hoe ziet een vrijplaats met minder vrijheden en meer kosten eruit? Hoeveel regels gelden er en hoe worden die gehandhaafd? Waarom moet je in een vrijplaats kunnen werken én wonen? En vooral: wat nu?
Aan het woord komen verschillende vrijplaatsbewoners, ervaringsdeskundigen en een woordvoerder van de gemeente Amsterdam. De wethouders weigerden medewerking.

Wat we gemeen hebben - Thijs Lijsters

De economische crisis, de pandemie en de klimaatcatastrofe hebben een deuk geslagen in ons (neoliberale) zelfbeeld als autonome individuen. Overal klinkt de roep om meer ‘gemeenschapszin’. Maar wat verbindt ons eigenlijk? Die vraag wordt meestal beantwoord in termen van ‘normen en waarden’ of ‘nationale identiteit’, en tegenwoordig zelfs onomwonden in termen van etniciteit of ras.
Geïnspireerd door een breed scala aan kritische denkers, vindt Thijs Lijster een alternatief in de traditie van het denken over de zogenaamde commons, of meenten. De meenten zijn gedeelde bronnen waar iedereen gebruik van kan maken zonder dat ze iemands bezit zijn. Vroeger waren dat bossen of velden, maar ook (wetenschappelijke) kennis, de openbare ruimte in de stad of het internet kunnen als zo’n meent gezien worden.
Het kapitalisme bedreigt de meenten en verandert ze steeds weer in (privé)bezit. Lijster laat zien waarom het van belang is dat we cruciale aspecten van ons leven (zoals wonen, zorgen en leren) niet als koopwaar behandelen, maar als meenten. Want zonder meenten hebben we niets gemeen.

VPRO Tegenlicht - Ons gemeengoed

Sinds 2005 heeft het aantal burgercollectieven in Nederland, ook wel samengevat onder de term commons, een enorme vlucht genomen. In een burgercollectief nemen burgers zelf het initiatief tot gezamenlijk beheer in situaties waar de overheid of de markt het laat afweten. Ouderparticipatiecrèches, Wikipedia, broodfondsen of windenergie-coöperaties zijn daar goede voorbeelden van. Uitgangspunt is dat men niet uitgaat van het eigen belang. Op korte termijn moet er misschien zelfs iets worden ingeleverd. Maar uiteindelijk komt het collectieve belang alle participerende leden ten goede.

Stichting Stad in de Maak is opgezet in 2013 in respons op twee stedelijke vraagstukken: Hoe kan aan ‘vastgelopen’ (en daarmee leegstaand) vastgoed een lokale maatschappelijke functie worden gegeven in plaats van langdurige leegstand? Hoe kunnen stadsbewoners op een meer directe manier betrokken worden bij de ontwikkeling van hun straat, wijk en stad?

Uitgewoond legt de structurele oorzaken van deze wooncrisis bloot. De torenhoge woningprijzen en huren zijn geen stom toeval. Decennialange neoliberale politiek is verantwoordelijk voor de huidige malaise; politici en beleidsmakers zijn geobsedeerd door woningbezit en betaalbaar huren staat laag op hun prioriteitenlijst.
Willen we het tij keren, dan moeten we breken met deze woonpolitiek. Hochstenbach laat ons - onderbouwd en vurig - zien waarom we het recht op een thuis keihard moeten verdedigen.

CSA Netwerk

Community Supported Agriculture doe je samen. CSA boeren en CSA leden gaan een partnerschap aan, waarbij de consumentleden zich voor een langere tijd verbinden aan het afnemen van de producten van één of meerdere boeren of producenten. Verantwoordelijkheden, risico’s en opbrengsten van het boerenbedrijf worden gedeeld. In Nederland wordt deze vorm van landbouw ook wel gemeenschapslandbouw of pergolalandbouw genoemd. Als lid van zo’n CSA weet je precies waar je eten vandaan komt.
